PHRASES AND PHILOSOPHIES FOR THE USE OF THE YOUNG, oscar wilde, 1894

The first duty in life is to be as artificial as possible. What the second duty is no one has as yet discovered.

Wickedness is a myth invented by good people to account for the curious attractiveness of others.

If the poor only had profiles there would be no difficulty in solving the problem of poverty.

Those who see any difference between soul and body have neither.

A really well-maded buttonhole is the only link between Art and Nature.

Religions die when they are proved to be true. Science is the record of dead religions.

The well-bred contradict other people. The wise contradict themselves.

Nothing that actually occurs is of the smallest importance.

Dullness is the coming of age of seriousness.

In all unimportant matters, style, not sincerity, is the essential. In all important matters, style, not sincerity, is the essential.

If one tells the truth, one is sure, sooner or later, to be found out.

Pleasure is the only thing one should live for. Nothing ages like happiness.

It is only by not paying one's bills that one can hope to live in the memory of the commercial classes.

No crime is vulgar, but all vulgarity is crime. Vulgarity is the conduct of others.

Only the shallow know themselves.

Time is a waste of money.

One should always be a little improbable.

There is a fatality about all good resolutions. They are invariably made too soon.

The only way to atone for being occasionally a little over-dressed is by being always absolutely over-educated.

To be premature is to be perfect.

Any preoccupation with ideas of what is right and wrong in conduct shows an arrested intellectual development.

Ambition is the last refuge of the failure.

A truth ceases to be true when more than one person believes in it.

In examinations the foolish ask questions that the wise cannot answer.

Greek dress was in its essence inartistic. Nothing should reveal the body but the body.

One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.

It is only the superficial qualities that last. Man's deeper nature is soon found out.

Industry is the root of all ugliness.

The ages live in history through their anachronisms.

It is only the gods who taste of death. Apollo has passed away, but Hyacinth, whom men say he slew, lives on. Nero and Narcissus are always with us.

The old believe everything: the middle-aged suspect everything: the young know everything.

The condition of perfection is idleness: the aim of perfection is youth.

Only the great masters of style ever succeed in being obscure.

There is something tragic about the enormous number of young men there are in England at the present moment who start life with perfect profiles, and end by adopting some useful profession.

To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.

EAGLE of Austerlitz! where were thy wings
When far away upon a barbarous strand,
In fight unequal, by an obscure hand,
Fell the last scion of thy brood of Kings!
Poor boy! thou wilt not flaunt thy cloak of red,5
Nor ride in state through Paris in the van
Of thy returning legions, but instead
Thy mother France, free and republican,
Shall on thy dead and crownless forehead place
The better laurels of a soldier’s crown,10
That not dishonoured should thy soul go down
To tell the mighty Sire of thy race
That France hath kissed the mouth of Liberty,
And found it sweeter than his honied bees,
And that the giant wave Democracy15
Breaks on the shores where Kings lay crouched at ease.

LOUIS NAPOLEON, oscar wilde

portraits of people.
portraits of our family, of our presidents and queens.
why not portraits of the things that keep us alive?

WordReference.com Language Forums

Wusai asked the 2nd of january of 2006:
Why is it that, in Spanish, a still life is called "naturaleza muerta", or literally, "dead nature"? What influences Spanish to call it "dead"? In English, it seems more like it's life that's been captured, or "still". I'm curious: Is it a difference between the two cultures, or something else?

how do you see your cup today, half full or half empty?

day 2

"the lim chhour shopp", karangahape road, auckland city.
segundo dia.

"persimmon", "paw paw", "feijoa".

the lim chhour shopp", karangahape road, auckland city.
second day.
i don't have any idea on what to do!
but i know precisely, that the idea is not having an idea.

josefina came home today, and we decided to think of something together.
we went to the street like any day to do the every-day things: like going to the supermarket.
this time, not looking for something to buy, but looking for something to buy us.
the variety of fruits and vegetables in the shop of shapes, colors and names called immediately our attention.
"persimmon", "paw paw", "feijoa".
fruits came down as coins.
everything was transformed in a playing field.
we found ourselves in a casino, surrounded by numbers, offers, fruits.
which one, which one, which one?
we would have taken them all without even knowing them.
we weren't picking the fruits but the fruits were picking us.
the music and the lights went off when a person from the supermarket told us we couldn't take photos of the food. (thanks honey, we've already photographed them all).
so we went back home and i started painting this jackfruit.

don't know what fruit will pick me tomorrow.

day 1

distintas caras, distintas perspectivas.
distintos dias, distintos pensamientos.

my thoughts and the thoughts of the others.
there's not only one point of view.
we change our minds.
things produce different effects with the pass of time.
what is interesting today, maybe won't be tomorrow.
i like broccoli now, but didn't last year.
if everything was a fact, if we wouldn't change our minds, the world would be totally boring.
different faces, different perspectives.
different days, different thoughts.

a projects with 56 days and 56 images.
how many ideas can be produced when we are not thinking and we are just doing them?
